What is SSL/TLS?

The SSL protocol is the precursor to the new and better Transport Layer Security (TLS) protocol. The primary purpose of the TLS protocol is to protect information from wiretapping, tampering, and so on. TLS provides a high level of confidentiality. It is used for on-line payments, on-line transfers, e-banking and more.

The SSL certificate provides an encrypted connection between the server and the client browser. If your site sends or receives confidential information (payment data, account and account information, access passwords, credit card details, bank accounts, etc.), then it is recommended to install an SSL certificate.
